Installation guide
Installation guide for Holding tanks & waste water tanks
Before you begin:
Please make sure that all the parts are in the package
3 x sensors … 1 x indicator panel … 1 x control unit … 1 x #M cleaning towel …
6 x cables (3 for sensors … 1 for DC power … 1 for Analog connection … 1 for indicator panel), installation instructions … warranty statement.
Determine the best places on your tank to locate the sensors and the control box
Determine the best way to safely access electrical supply from your boat’s batteries 12 ~ 24 volt
Quick Installation:
o Turn off electrical supply
o Attach sensors to the tank
o Locate the control panel to the tank
o Connect all wires and components
o Turn on electrical supply to the Gobius
o Start Gobius
o Calibrate with the tank EMPTY
o Change default settings
o Control the new settings if required
o Test and run Gobius
Plug into external instruments, lamp or buzzer
Installing the indicator panel and connecting the system:
Decide where to place the Gobius indicator panel. It can for example be installed near the holding tank or in the head area. You may increase the length of the panel cable up 20m/ 64ft with a standard PC network TP cable
We suggest that you make a small rectangular cutout where you want to place the cable from the control box to the indicator panel. This cutout should be at least 4mm x 22mm. See the enclosed template on page 5
Use the pre-attached 3M adhesive pad to fasten the indicator panel to the wall
Connect the panel and the sensors to the control box. Now connect the power cables to the battery supply (12-24VDC). Make sure to connect correctly … positive + is white and negative – is black. See illustration on page 5
If you want to connect Gobius to an external display like VDO,Wema, Faria … or to an additional light/buzzer you should use the analog output on the control box together with the enclosed cable.
We recommend that you put a layer of Vaseline or similar on the plugs that are connected to the controls, which will prevent oxidation. The electronics are protected from dampness and humidity. The sensors and the control box are not waterproof. Please contact FM Marin for advice on how to make your Gobius waterproof.
Connect your Gobius via a 500mA fuse.
Attaching the sensor to the tank wall:
Start by reading through the green document before attaching the sensors to the tank at levels ¼ - ½ & ¾
Keep in mind that the sensors are sensitive to physical shock and should be handled carefully.
Control of sensors and panel before calibrating the tank:
With the control box connected to the electrical supply then Gobius will start by lighting all lamps one after another, once
If Gobius does not start press the on/off button on the panel. After this a control of the sensors is carried out and each lamp will flash simultaneously with the blue lamp.
Finally the red-yellow-green lamps will show a steady light. This indicates that Gobius has not yet been calibrated and you should move onto the calibration process.
If there is a problem with one of the sensors, either with the connection or the sensor itself, this will show on the panel as a steady lamp plus the blue lamp as well.
A steady blue lamp is an indication of a fault somewhere.
For further information please see the “table of lights” on page 7
Calibration – the tank must be empty
No tanks are the same. There are differences in size, shape, wall thickness, materials and age. In order to compensate for these differences you have to calibrate the system before you start to use the Gobius.
Calibration at installation:
Empty the tank
Start Gobius and wait for red, yellow and green lamps to be on
Press and hold on/off button until all four lamps are on
Release the button as soon as all lamps are on
The calibration starts automatically and takes about 30 secs
When the blue lamp is on the calibration is complete.
Calibration at a later time:
When Gobius is on, press and hold the on/off button
Wait until all lamps are on
Release the button when all lamps are on
The calibration starts automatically and takes about 30 secs
When the blue lamp is on the calibration is complete
NB … if you change the tank material steel~aluminum, you will need to re-calibrate the Gobius
Analogue instruments:
It is possible to plug in an analogue instrument as an alternative way to show the tank level. Refer to page 7 to find the 3 x alternatives to choose between depending upon the product and the standard.
On page 8 you will find an illustration showing how to plug in and wire the instrument to the Gobius control box. There is an extra cable enclosed with the unit for this purpose. We have assumed that you have the analogue dial already installed and with cable running to the tank.
Extra lamp/alarm buzzer:
In addition to the Gobius panel you may want to plug in a lamp or alarm buzzer to give a warning at either the ¼ or ¾ full locations. Refer to page 8 for these wiring instructions
ON / OFF :
You start Gobius by pressing the on/off button on the indicator panel or by turning on the vessels power supply. A function control on the lamps and sensors is immediately performed When this control is done the level is measured and the correct level indicator lamps will come on.
During this measuring you may hear a soft humming sound from each of the sensors. Thereafter a calculation is made by the control box and the correct level lamps will remain on.
Each and every time you turn off Gobius using the on/off button or by switching off the power supply Gobius will memorize all settings and calibrations. You will not need to re-calibrate due to the power having been off for a lengthy period of time.
Changing predefined settings:
Gobius is made to be optimized for your unique tank and your requirements. There are different tank materials and appropriate intervals between measurements. You will find the predefined settings on page 7. If these are not in accordance to your requirements you will need to change them. You will find the available options on page 7.
You change your settings by pressing and holding down the on/off button on the panel. Gobius automatically flicks through the alternatives as shown in the table on page 7. Release the button when your choice is shown. Now you have made a new setting … your setting. Repeat this until you have made the changes you want.
With Gobius on … make notes in the table of the changes you need
Press and hold the on/off button down until the chosen row’s of lamps are on at the panel.
Release the button to make your choice a setting
Repeat until you have made the changes you want
A wrongly chosen setting is corrected by repeating the procedure
By keeping the button down all alternatives will be presented but no changes will be made … until you release the button as described above.
Maintenance:
Gobius requires no extra maintenance. The only thing to remember to do is to re-calibrate the tank once or twice a year.
