Controllable Pitch Gearboxes

Marine Gearboxes

The primary functions of the marine gearbox are to engage and disengage the engine from the propeller (provide neutral) and to provide reverse rotation. This is achieved via a series of internal clutches which engage different gear sets, with an internal oil pump that generates hydraulic pressure which forces these clutches together to provide engagement.

Thirdly the marine gearbox sets the ratio between engine RPM and propeller RPM, called the reduction ratio.  As the typical diesel rotates around 2000 RPM, too fast for a propeller to be efficient, the gears inside the transmission slow down the propeller rotation to roughly half that of the engine.

Power Take Off (PTO) and Hybrid Propulsion

The fourth function of the marine gearbox is to drive an auxiliary device, such as a hydraulic pump or electric motor via a power take-off (PTO) point.

PTO’s enable Hybrid Propulsion by taking power from the main power source – the turning shaft of the running engine – and transmitting it to other systems.  Electric motors to power to freezers, thrusters, refrigeration or hydraulic pumps to power winches, stabilizers or fire hoses are all powered from a PTO in the gearbox.

If unused, a PTO is covered by a plate.  When removed the transmission gear which would engage the gear of the auxiliary device is visible.

PTI (power take-in) points can be configured as well, to take in power to boost the main propulsion shaft.  A PTH (power take home) likewise can connect to electric or hydraulic power to serve as back-up/redundant power to the vessel.

Controllable Pitch Gearboxes

Controllable pitch gearboxes incorporate a power take-off (PTO) point to drive a hydraulic pump exclusively for controlling the propeller pitch.

Hundested CP Gearboxes

Since 1985 Hundested has designed and produced Controllable Pitch Gearboxes with built in pitch control for the propeller.  Propeller pitch control can be mechanical or hydraulic operation.

The hydraulic system of all CP Gearboxes includes one pump for the pitch control and another pump for the clutch, shaft brake and lubrication.

CP Gearboxes range in size from 300 HP to 4500 HP, depending on engine RPM and the reduction ratio.  All sizes have ground, case hardened, helical gear wheels.  Our gearboxes can be delivered with both semi-flexible foundations as well as a semi-elastic coupling on the gearbox output shaft, ensuring that noise and vibrations will not be transmitted to the hull.

Hundested offers individually developed gearboxes that can meet any special requirements regarding dimensions, power, optimized bollard pull, fuel consumption, reduction ratio, PTO´s, angle gears etc.  High reduction or customized gear ratios are available allowing large diameter, slow rotating propellers with high efficiency.

What is Hybrid Marine Propulsion?

  • Any combination of an internal combustion (IC) engine and an electric motor
  • Includes diesel engine, electric motors, generators, wind and solar, electrical storage and charging, and a control system
  • Reduces fuel consumption and emissions
  • Enables optimized engine operation by drawing power from the most efficient source
  • Permits numerous and varying power demands of Superyachts
  • Enables flexible operation profiles of Commercial workboats – low speeds from electric motor and high power from main engine
Hybrid Propulsion and PTO/PTI

Full flexibility in hybrid propulsion is achieved – running fully electrical, diesel or both – with Hundested CP Propulsion System technology.  Hundested gearboxes incorporate a modular PTO system to drive hydraulic pumps or generators.  Up to three PTO/PTI’s can be accommodated per gearbox for all sizes.  Each is fitted with independently operated hydraulic clutch, including a Hundested clutch for the input shaft of the gearbox.  On each PTO/PTI you can have a hydraulic pump or a generator/electric motor connected to the gear.  This generator can replace a normal diesel/auxiliary generator and at the same time function as a motor if “silent mode” is required.  The electric motor can be used as a boost function if needed.  This option has been implemented by several yachts to minimize the size of the diesel engine and when maximum power is needed the electric motor will boost the diesel engine.
