Thrusters

Bow thrusters at the forward end of the vessel and stern thrusters mounted aft serve to maneuver and position the boat with more precision than the main propulsion system.  Because they are positioned along the length of the vessel, they provide lateral thrust ahead and astern of the center of lateral resistance, enabling maneuvering toward the dock, or away from obstructions in its path.

Tunnel Thrusters

Both bow and stern thrusters may be housed in through-hull tunnels.

Retractable Thrusters

A retractable thruster is a propeller which can be retracted into the hull when not in use.  When deployed the retractable thruster works like a conventional thruster.  When retracted, while sailing, the hull opening is closed and flush ensuring minimum drag.

Retractable Propulsion System

Hundested provided expertise to Baltic Yachts to develop their Retractable Propulsion System (RPS).  Fully retracted propeller and fair hull surface produces less drag and 360° rotation allows propeller to function also as a stern thruster.

Tunnel Thrusters

Hundested tunnel thrusters range in size from 20 HP to 2700 HP, using either a fixed, adjustable or controllable pitch (CP) propeller and powered with either an hydraulic, electric or diesel power source.  Hundested offers four standard models however requests for tunnel diameters and lengths not in the standard range can be accommodated.

Retractable Swing Thrusters

The first retractable swing thruster was developed by Hundested Propeller.  Available in four model sizes ranging from 25 HP to 200 HP, the standard housing is made of aluminum with a three or four bladed propeller in either aluminum or NIBRAL (nickel bronze aluminum).  The prime mover is hydraulic and the retraction mechanism is either electrically or hydraulically activated.

All thrusters are designed for heavy use in all types of pleasure and commercial vessels.  See up close on Baltic Yachts ‘Liara’.

Hundested
Retractable Propulsion Systems (RPS)

  • Eliminates propeller drag and leaves a clean and flush underwater hull shape
  • Fully retracts the propeller up into the hull under sail when the propellers are not in use
  • Enables higher speeds and enhanced maneuverability
  • Hundested CP propeller is at the core of the RPS
  • Used by performance sailing yachts
