Description

Shaft Shark Model SS1200

The Shaft Shark Model SS1200 attaches to your shaft just forward of the propeller and rotates with the shaft, cutting away any rope, weed or debris that may entangle your shaft and propeller. It is a two-piece, split unit machined from high quality 316L type stainless steel.

  • Keep your propeller free from rope, weeds and underwater debris
  • Eliminate the possibility of damage to your propeller, strut and cutlass
  • Eliminate the need for being towed due to fouled stern gear or propeller

Installation
Installation

The SHAFT SHARK requires a minimum of 0.920” of shaft clearance between the cutlass bearing and the propeller hub. This allows for sufficient clearance with the cutlass bearing for shaft movement when maneuvering and for water-flow through the cutlass bearing.shaftsharkinstall_web
The Shaft Shark should be installed with the cutting blade side facing forward. It must be mounted flush up against the propeller hub face on the fixed diameter of the shaft.
It is not necessary to remove the propeller prior to installation. The Shaft Shark is kept securely in place by the clamp action of the two allen-head bolts. It is advisable to use the supplied Vibra-Tite VC-3 or Loctite or similar on the screws/bolts.

Separate the two halves. Re-position them around the shaft, up against the propeller hub, and tighten in place evenly with the two bolts.

Underwater Installation

Vibra-TITE® VC-3 Threadlocker:

  • Powerful threadlocker ideally suited for marine use.
  • Utilizes a special blend of acrylic resins to prevent fasteners from loosening even under extreme vibration.
  • Dries to the touch within seconds of application. Coated parts are ready for underwater use in just a few minutes.
  • Coated parts can be stored indefinitely before use.
  • Offers multiple reuses. Using steady pressure and standard hand tools, coated parts can easily be adjusted, removed and reused.

Instructions:

  • Apply a coating 360° around the screw threads (filling thread depth).
  • Let dry 10-30 minutes depending upon the screw sizes.

Loctite 248:

Loctite has a product called Loctite 248, a medium strength Thread locker Stick which they say can be used under water – it’s in a lipstick type dispenser. Apply the #248 to clean dry threads out of the water & make sure the wax based goop(product) is “pushed/smooched” into all of the threads (no air gaps), before taking the fastener below the water. It takes 24hrs to full cure.

We have enclosed a single use packet of the VC-3 Threadlocker for the installation of your Shaft Shark on dry land or underwater. There are additional instructions on the use of this product on the package.

Drag
Drag

The SHAFT SHARK is sized to both the shaft diameter and the propeller hub diameter to ensure the lowest drag factor for the boat. Overall drag will vary depending upon the speed of the boat … the propeller hub diameter and the size of the SHAFT SHARK installed. This is why there are different model units to suit the shaft and hub combinations.

Maintenance
Maintenance

With no moving parts maintenance is minimal. There are no moving parts to maintain or replace on an annual basis. The edges can be re-sharpened when necessary. Do NOT use a wire brush or like to clean the shaft shark as it may compromise the outer surface area.
